CAD, generative design and simulation

Design software is where many manufacturing costs are locked in, long before a part reaches the floor. The tools here cover CAD for modeling parts and assemblies, CAM for programming machines, simulation for checking designs, and newer AI features that propose shapes, predict performance or suggest toolpaths.

Autodesk Fusion, Siemens NX, SOLIDWORKS and Onshape are full CAD systems used across industries. Fusion and NX also include CAM and simulation, and Fusion offers generative design that produces part shapes from loads and constraints. Onshape runs in the browser with built-in version control. nTop focuses on computational design for lattices and complex geometry, often for additive manufacturing. Neural Concept learns from past simulation results to predict how new designs will perform. CloudNC CAM Assist suggests machining strategies inside existing CAM software.

Generative and AI design results need engineering judgment. A shape that meets the load case may be hard to inspect, clean or finish, or may only suit one manufacturing process. Check results in simulation, involve manufacturing engineers early, and confirm the design can be made with the machines and suppliers you actually use.

File formats and data management matter more than feature lists. Check how each tool exchanges models with customers and suppliers, how it handles revisions and drawings, and whether your team can keep working if a cloud service is unavailable. For CAM, confirm post-processors exist for your machines and controls.

7 AI manufacturing tools in cad, generative design and simulation

Autodesk Fusion

Cloud CAD, CAM and CAE in one tool, with generative design that proposes part shapes from loads and constraints.

  • Runs as a cloud service
  • Free plan or free tier

nTop

Computational design software for lattices, heat exchangers and complex geometry, often used for additive manufacturing.

  • Runs as a cloud service
  • Free plan or free tier

Neural Concept

AI engineering platform that learns from simulation data to predict performance of new designs in seconds.

CAM Assist

by CloudNC

AI add-in that generates CNC machining strategies and toolpaths inside existing CAM software.

Collaboration between design and the shop floor saves the most time. When CAM programmers and quality engineers see models early, they catch features that need special tooling, surfaces that are hard to reach, or tolerances tighter than the process can hold. Cloud CAD and shared data management make that review easier, but they only help if the review happens before release.

Hardware still matters for heavy work. Large assemblies and simulation runs need capable workstations or cloud compute, so check each vendor's system requirements against the machines your engineers use. Export controls and customer rules may also limit where design data can be stored, which affects cloud tools, so ask vendors where data is hosted.

Training and licensing deserve a line in the plan too. Many shops run more than one CAD system because customers send different formats, and AI features are often sold as add-ons or higher tiers. Ask what is included before you commit.

Questions about cad, generative design and simulation

What is generative design?

You define loads, fixed points, keep-out zones, material and manufacturing method, and the software generates part shapes that meet them. An engineer then reviews, edits and validates the result. Autodesk Fusion is a common example.

Can AI write CNC programs?

Tools such as CloudNC CAM Assist suggest machining strategies and toolpaths inside CAM software. A programmer still reviews tools, speeds, fixturing and collisions before anything runs on a machine.

Is browser-based CAD good enough for production work?

Many companies use Onshape for production parts, and it adds version control and collaboration. Check performance on your largest assemblies, data export needs and customer requirements before switching.

How do AI simulation tools differ from regular simulation?

Regular simulation solves physics equations for each design. AI tools like Neural Concept learn from many past simulations and predict results much faster, which helps explore options, though final checks still use full simulation or testing.
